As instructed by God, Ibrahim left his wife and in the middle of the desert and walked away. In the hot desert of Makkah, both mother and son were hungry as well as thirsty. Therefore, she started miserably looking for water for her infant son, but she could not find any. Unknowingly, Hajar ran back and forth seven times between the two hills of Safa and Marwah in the burning heat of Makkah, looking for water. This is when her thirsty infant Isma’il scraped the land with his feet and suddenly water sprang out.

On finding the spring, Hajar enclosed it in sand and stones to restrict the flow of the water that became a well. On fact, the name Zamzam comes from Zome Zome, meaning “stop flowing phrase repeated by Hajar during her attempt to contain the spring water.
